RE: Picking up my new Seneca

Grats on the new rig. I have some major problems with my 36fs but since working them out all seems well. I wish you luck sorting everything out. It's a great RV when you get through the small stuff. 1 think I should mention something about that outside fridge access door. It has a tendency to fly off. This isn't unusual and it spans many rigs. The norcold access door has kind of a bad design and most rv centers stock these doors($50) because of this. I had to buy a new one and get in painted ($300+). To avoid this scenario a 2nd time I did the double chain thing. If you do do this don't leave enough slack so that it can come out and mess up the paint job. I put the clasps in such a way that the door can open about an inch and then you can slide a finger in and release it. I'm just mentioning this to hopefully save you the grief in the likely event this door goes airborne on you. Good luck with the rig. I hope you have as much fun with it as we do.

RE: Jayco Seneca: review after 10K

Well, after over a month, we did get our Seneca back. Everything appears to be fixed and we were quite happy. That is until I noticed that the outside refrigerator access door must have blown off somewhere on the highway. I drove the route twice last night in a vain attempt to find it but no luck. I'll try one more time, even with a snowballs chance, to attempt to avoid the problems Monday is going to bring. A little luck please.

RE: Jayco Seneca: review after 10K

For those of you are interested, here's Jayco's reply. They replied in short order and it's nice to see that, at the very least superficially, they are concerned about their product. We'll see how things work out but this is a good start. Clearly they aren't all that happy about the post on this forum. In my response I told them that I'd be posting another review, in another 10,000 miles, and that I would hope it to be nothing but positive. In fact I'd hope that more people can do mileage reviews. I know it would help myself make an informed decision on whatever the next rig may be. Thank You for taking the time to email Jayco Customer Service. Your comments and questions are important to us. I am sorry to hear of your frustrations. Obviously you have the right to express them in any form. I cannot stop you from posting on RV.NET. I do want you to know that Jayco Inc. is a committed company dedicated to building a quality unit and providing the industries longest warranty. It is with that warranty that errors can be corrected. And we want to do this for you. You indicate that these concerns have been corrected and that you hope to enjoy the unit for many years to come. Please let me know if there are outstanding issues that I can assist our Jayco dealers to resolve. Again, your comments are important to us. They help Jayco in providing our customers with the quality and service they expect and deserve. Thanks for the opportunity to be of assistance. Your unit file will be noted and your concerns will be shared with the motorized quality manager. Sincerely, Craig Newcomer Customer Service Jayco Inc.

RE: Jayco Seneca: review after 10K

Well I've been informed by my service manager that Jayco is actually laying off a significant portion of their work force. This is the reason he gave me for parts taking so long to arrive. If this is indeed the case then I don't see quality or customer service improving. Then again, who knows. I've been through a few layoffs myself and usually what happens is the "expensive" people get let go first. Those being the people who got the promotions and know what they are doing. Maybe Jayco will do the opposite and we'll have less problems? Probably unlikely. I think before we buy our next rig that I'm going to use the current one to visit factories. I'd like to buy from a company that takes pride in their products and their people next time around. Even if I have to pay more. I'd like to hear from my MH manufacturer "We'd never let something like that happen with our product, we'll take care of it right away." Vic

Jayco Seneca: review after 10K

First of all let me start by saying that we like our 36fs but we've had too many problems to chalk them up to "new rig syndrome." We purchased our Seneca in May of this year. Pros: 1) Power (we live in the rockies, this is important for us) 2) Handling is good for a rig this size. Maneuvering & parking this rig is very easy. 3) Mileage is not bad for the size and weight (approx 8.5-10mpg depending on towing/terrain) 4) The features and layout fit us perfectly, of course this is subjective. Plenty of storage. Cons: 1) Quality control in manufacture is horrible (at least this has been our experience) a) pinched harness at drivers side kick panel and sill protector. Dealer had the rig for 3 days and couldn't find it. Slides, micro, fridge, gas detector, etc, all on the same circuit....seriously. I gave up on the dealer and Diag/repair myself. Took 20 minutes to find and repair with the help of a friend. Jayco pinched the harness at time of manufacture. It had to be relocated. b) Obstruction in range fan caused fan parts to blow out of outside vent. c) Microwave was inop (wouldn't you test after install?) d) Roof line at rear was badly scratched (right through the paint) This was clearly by a hose or something and was done before the ladder was installed. e) improper storage door installation at water closet. Loud snapping sound and damaged parts also leading to paint chipping. f) The driver's side kick panel clips all broken probably due to trying to shove a mass of wiring behind it. The installer used a factory screw to screw the panel into the rubber molding of the door to secure it. That, of course, ripped out in short order. g) I had to reroute the battery compartment cables as they were rubbing badly and one was almost rubbed through. (this is not a recall on this model) h) oh and btw the "surround sound hi end setup" is anything but. They used some cheap-o computer speakers and wired the whole thing up improperly. If your watching a movie you can't even hear some of the characters talking. There are some more little things but they aren't worth mentioning as they were trivial and easily fixed. Many were direct results of really poor quality at the factory. Door misalignments, dripped roof sealant all over the place, and such. I am a former technician and was able to repair the problems the dealer can't seem to handle. After a couple of months they finally got the new microwave/fan in and are currently installing it. I expect that most of our problems with the unit have been dealt with at this point. On the flip side we really enjoyed our trips this summer and otherwise really like the rig. I was able to fix most all little problems on the road so other then the constantly blowing fuses and lack of a mirco we we're ok. Now that that is taken care of, I'm hoping for smooth sailing. This is our first rig and I think when the time comes we are going to look at something more akin to a dynamax. At least we'll try and up then anti and find a manufacturer that actually has some kind of quality control. Disappointing because we researched rigs for 2 years before buying this one.

RE: 2008 Jayco Seneca 36FS reverse camera monitor problem

There is a 5 amp fuse behind the driver's side kick panel. Between this 5 amp and the camera monitor there is also another 2 inline fuses but it's most likely the 5 amp hanging behind the kick panel This is also on the same control circuit as several other major items (slides, fridge, micro, etc). If everything else is out as well go to the rear panel (by the bed). The 4th spot from the right is a 15 amp fuse. If it's out there will be an LED lit up next to it. We had a short from the factory that the idiots at the shop couldn't figure out so I did it myself. It took a whopping 20 minutes to find which they couldn't accomplish in days. The harness under the drivers side door panel was pinched because they never took the time to put it in the correct channel.

RE: Big Rig?

I sent an email to the Good Sam club to see what the definition of a Big Rig is for camp grounds. They must have something solid being that they list it as criteria when they evaluate a CG. Some of you guys have some really big MHs either in tow or with tow vehicles. Does it wear you out to drive these things? I mean....what am I in for here O.o? I've driven with some BIG race car trailers but never attached to a 37' RV. We'll be pulling either a toad or a box trailer with toys.

RE: Big Rig?

Ah yeah, I would call that a big rig, wow.

RE: Big Rig?

I guess the real question would be what do CGs consider a big rig since that's where it really matters. This is our first motor home and I was trying to figure out where it falls in the order of things with regards to campgrounds. It's a Jayco Seneca 36fs, 36ft 7"s long. Being that it's a "super" C....it's kind of a strange category I guess.

Big Rig?

What constitutes a big rig? Length/Size? I see there's allot of talk about big rig access.

RE: US Sticker Map

It is fun to hear about. Gives a little insight into how people have decided to explore this continent we live on. When we bought our first sticker map it struck me as to the lifestyle we're now venturing in to. The thought was more like "Wow, look at all the places we can go now". It's not that we haven't been traveling and camping, quite the contrary. It's more a freedom from plane flights, putting the dogs in kennels, and other people's/companies time line for living. It feels more like wandering, exploring then anything we've done before. We can actually stop and take our time because we're taking our house with us hehe. I really get a kick out of that. Kitchen, bathroom, bed, couch, tv....I'm good lol.

US Sticker Map

My Wife and I have just purchased our first US sticker map to go with our new RV. I was curious if people have their own "rules" or traditions for when they put a new state up. Is it enough to just drive through the state of do you explore a certain amount first?

RE: Options for 'heavy' towing?

I pulled a race trailer for a nhra team for about 2 years. I don't remember the exact specs but it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 34ft and 12-14K pounds. We had 2 trucks that would pull, a gas and a diesel. Nobody used the gas truck. It was miserable. My opinion...go with a diesel but honestly I haven't towed with anything else since then so I'm biased.

RE: One Tank Trips From N.E. Ohio

I know the feeling. We're going to be doing the same for our first trip here in CO. We purchased a couple of those highway cones to practice maneuvering with so maybe we'll decrease the embarrassment factor. Good Sam has a nice little trip planner that might help. We've been using it to peruse campgrounds in our area: http://beta.goodsamclub.com/travel/Default.aspx

RE: 2008 Seneca 34SS Price Quote

Low sulfur fuel is a mandate by the gov/epa. Soon, if not now, that's all you'll be able to get. If you get a Jayco with the older duramax (this isn't low sulfur as well?...don't know) and it isn't low sulfur your probably going to want to run an additive. The sulfur works as a lubricant so it's a consideration. I run diesel additive in my 2000 f350 every other tank or so to keep the injectors lubed and happy. FYI, Mexico doesn't have low sulfur fuel so if your planning on taking a trip south of the border it could be an issue. The new duramax that comes in the 2008 Senecas and later is a also quite a bit more powerful with 330hp, as opposed to 300, and a fairly massive 624 ft lbs of torque. I've driven both versions and was seriously impressed by the new duramax. Test drove the Rig up I70 here in Colorado (entrance to the rockies = serious grade) and could easily maintain the 65mph speed limit. Whatever you choose to go with I wish you the best of luck. Vic

RE: 2007 Supernova Performance Chip ???

Typically when you install a chip you also want to take a look at your intake and exhaust. If your flowing more fuel it's a good idea to make sure your engine can breath and likewise, properly vent exhaust. It's also a very good idea to have an EGT (exhaust gas temp) sensor installed if your running a turbo. There is a very real danger zone when you've chipped your vehicle, especially when your towing. Not all after market programmers/ chips are created equal but most of them do come with a "tow safe" program to prevent severe engine damage while towing. This usually means cracking or melting down a piston or two. I've seen this The really impressive upgrades I've seen to this point were either larger injectors (which kill the need for a chip) or propane (wonderful for towing). Neither are cheap solutions unfortunately. Vic (I'm a ASE Cert. Master Tech for those who care....I don't lol)

RE: 2008 Seneca 34SS Price Quote

We just purchased a 2008 Jayco Seneca 36fs for $115,000 pretty well loaded. The quote from rvdirect was $111,000 but one of the local dealers just happened to have the unit we were looking for on the lot. Instead of waiting the two months for rvdirect we decided to just go ahead and buy the one off the lot. The inflated dealer price was always around $167K but they would always readily come down to $119k in past years. We've been looking at these units for over 3 years now. I'm not the most knowledgeable guy when it comes to buying these things, this is our first MH, but I'd say that now is the best time to buy. If you buy from the dealer bring in the rvdirect quote and that pretty much kills the whole nonsense of bargaining. Vic
